holding a 31-30 lead
FARO, Portugal -- Cristiano Ronaldo equalized three minutes from time as Portugal salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in a friendly Wednesday. Ronaldo poked the ball in at the front post after a corner, putting some shine on a muted performance by the Real Madrid striker. Ronaldos 40th international goal cancelled out Kevin Strootmans 17th-minute opener, the midfielder driving a low left-foot shot into the corner of the net from just outside the area. The Dutch teams recent good form gave it the edge in the first half, though it needed some inspired second-half defending to keep the Portuguese out until Ronaldos late breakthrough. Ricardo van Rhijn twice intervened to deny Danny and Ronaldo from close range after the break, then goalkeeper Michel Vrom leapt acrobatically to tip Ronaldos shot wide in the 63rd. "We corrected what we were doing wrong after the interval and in the second half we were top quality," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "We had a lot of chances ... and the goal was a just reward." In official competition, the Dutch have won their first six World Cup qualifying games and are seven points clear in Group D, as well as unbeaten over the past year. Portugal has been a lot less impressive, recording four wins, two draws and a loss in its bid to reach the tournament in Brazil. The Portuguese lead Group F with 14 points, two more than second-place Russia, but the Russians have two games in hand. That Dutch sharpness under coach Louis van Gaal told from the outset, with Arjen Robben repeatedly unsettling the Portuguese defence. But Robin van Persie, named Oranje captain after Van Gaal dropped Wesley Sneijder, was mostly a spectator before being replaced after an hour. Injuries to three key midfielders -- Nani, Joao Moutinho and Raul Meireles -- weakened the Portuguese challenge. Even so, Ruben Micael had a clear chance to level the score in the 28th when the ball reached him, unmarked, at the back post but he shot wide as two Dutch defenders slid in. Kansas State had three chances to tie or take the lead down the stretch, and the underdogs came away empty each time. Arizona (5-0) received 18 points from Kaleb Tarczewski, 15 from Gabe York and shot 63.2 percent from the field in the second half to advanced to Wednesdays championship game against either Pittsburgh or 15th-ranked San Diego State. Marcus Foster paced Kansas State (3-2) with 23 points behind six 3-pointers. Each of Arizonas first four wins came by at least 17 points, and even though it led for the final 12-plus minutes on Tuesday, the outcome was not decided until the closing minutes. Foster drained a 3-pointer to pull Kansas State within 66-64 with 2:35 to go, and Nino Williams missed a potential tying jumper from the baseline the next time down. Foster was whistled for traveling on a drive to the basket following a missed jumper by T.J. McConnell, who compounded the mistake by bricking the front end of a 1-and-1 with 59 seconds to play. Williams got to the basket but his shot rimmed out, and Stanley Johnson made two frree throws to give Arizona a 68-64 lead with 22.dddddddddddd5 seconds remaining. Arizona split a pair of trips at the free throw line to hold on from there. Fosters 11 first-half points helped Kansas State keep pace with Arizona, which scored its first 16 points in the paint before Johnson hit a corner 3 to even things at 19-19. Arizona went into the break holding a 31-30 lead despite its leading scorer, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, being held scoreless in the first 20 minutes. The standout sophomore, who came in averaging nearly 16 ppg, threw down an alley-oop off an inbounds pass early in the second half and followed that up with a putback slam to put Arizona ahead, 40-36. Kansas State responded with the next five points to retake the lead, but Tarczewskis reverse layup began a string of 10 straight Arizona points. McConnell and York each made 3-pointers to cap the run, and Arizona never trailed again. Game Notes Arizona ran its regular season winning streak against non-conference opponents to 32 ...
